All of the horses who come through the gate at Phoenix Rising Equine Rescue and Sanctuary are seeking safety and serenity. Most of the horses remain here, protected for life. They are here for life often due to their special physical and/or mental health needs. Every once in awhile, there is a horse who needs the safety and serenity of our farm, but only for a bit of time. Every once in awhile, we are a temporary stop on a horse’s journey; we become a respite until their physical and mental health is restored.  Every once in awhile, there is a horse who we believe could and should move on to a forever home of their own. Bart

Big, Beautiful, Belgian

Bart is in his mid-twenties and has made his home with us since 2012. He arrived on a summer morning with his equine partner, Bubba. The two were surrendered by their owner who could no longer care for them. Bart was unsure that day, anxious, and even fearful. Over time, Bart slowly let his guard down. When he did, he revealed a huge heart of gold. Bart also revealed that his heart had been broken in the past, and he showed us signs of abuse that he endured. What he lived through previously, we will never truly know. In some ways, it does not truly matter. What matters most is the horse in front of us, now. What matters most is the Bart we know and love, now. What matters most is the Bart who has found refuge at Phoenix Rising.  [Read more…]

Tall, Dark Handsome In Need 

Laddie is a Standardbred, dark brown (just about black) gelding. At 20 years of age, he is a force of nature with a strong mind, independent spirit and mischievous attitude. Laddie was bred, born and trained to be a race trotter. [Trotting is the sport of harness racing.] After surviving an injury and devastating bone infection at a young age [an infection that left him compromised for life], Laddie witnessed the death of his owner and found himself without ‘his person’ and without a home. Suffering from physical and emotional trauma and needing a place to heal, Laddie was welcomed to Phoenix Rising Equine Rescue and Sanctuary in 2006. Here, he is loved. [Read more…]

Merlin

Striking, Strong, Stately

Our Merlin is in his mid-thirties. A Thoroughbred cross, standing just about 17 hands [68 inches from ground to withers (top of shoulder)], Merlin has found safety and serenity at Phoenix Rising since 2005. Here, he is loved.

Merlin has a way about him that has always drawn everyone in, both two-legged and four-legged. His quiet mannerism, depth of soul, and wisdom, hold a very special place on the farm. He is fiercely loyal. For several years, he served as a leader to a small herd who also found themselves seeking peace and love at Phoenix Rising. Darling, Delightful, Devilish

Seized by local authorities due to neglect, Pepsi, who is in his late twenties (almost 30 years old), arrived at our farm suffering from severely uncared for hooves and untreated Cushing disease. We worked tirelessly for a solid year, trying to restore his health. For months, he never emerged from his stall; he was too sore to stand and move around. When he did finally leave the comfort of the barn, it was to walk carefully and slowly to a soft spot where he could lie down. At times, we questioned whether we were making the best decision for Pepsi; we questioned whether or not we should continue. Pepsi showed us he wanted to go on, though. [Read more…]

As 2016 began, a flashy, sabino paint mare, sporting ribbons from western style equestrian competitions, found herself in danger. At the young age of 15, years of performing had taken a toll. With a very advanced stage of arthritis that left her crippled, she was deemed of no real value and carried the label of disposable. She was sold as a broodmare where care was given to her only if absolutely necessary to keep the babies she was producing sound enough to bring in money. A caring person, who could no longer be a witness to the neglect this horse was enduring, finally intervened. This person cleared the way for us to open our gate to this big beauty, now known as SIERRA.  [Read more…]
